Home Again, Home Again

On long trips
In our car
(Station wagon to be precise)
We’d roll back into town
Under a sky black and speckled
With the pinpoints of light

That kept me company
In the back seat
Out my window
As even darker ditches
And fields had slid by silently
While the soundtrack from our 8-track

Filled our lives with Olivia Newton-John
Or ABBA
Or the Carpenters
And as we made the final turn
Up our driveway
To our sleepy quiet house

A sing song voice
From the front passenger seat
Would turn to us and say
“Home again, home again jiggity jig”

We would know we were home
We’d wake up the house
So we could go to sleep

And another journey
And another day
Would be behind us.
