What's the Sign for Strike Out?

Baseball was never my “thing”
Even though my grandpa Emmett
Played pro for The Reds
By the time I was seventeen
I knew I’d had enough
And I gave it up for full-time running

I was a good right-hand first-baseman
And a really good third-baseman
I rarely let one through me
But I had a pretty weak throw and had to help it
With a skip-like hop towards first
Into a rainbow arching sidearm toss

At bat, I was terrible
And that’s simply being kind
I never understood the sign
Or even what to even look for
Probably because I couldn’t see very well
So I’d go up to bat and do my best.

And my best was usually to just
Hack hack hack away, try to get a lucky hit
“Keep your eye on the ball”
I heard from all over behind me
Followed up routinely by
“Good try, JT... next time!”
