Spirit Canyon

I loved to run through
Devil’s Gulch early in the morning
The cool night whispers laid down dew
And the first hues of the sun’s
Amber rays warmed the light
Around me as my shoes went
Cha.....
Cha.....
Cha.....
Cha.....
Rhythmically down the winding
Gravel road to the heart of the park
To the wound in the earth
To the gouged stone walls
Cracked and stained red from the blood
Of the Native’s Gods after their
Battle right here years ago.

I’d stop for a breath
And let my soul drink it in
The view and the spirits below
Then carefully scoot back
From the lip of the cliff
And continue in brighter light
With some thoughts now in order
Back down out the park
The way I came in
To my life until tomorrow.
